OVERVIEW
Colourful Sounds was made in a single week during what Sheridan calls Design Week! It is a week where all four years of Game Design students get together to participate in a Game Jam!
This particular Game Jam was Alt. Ctrl. themed, where each group was challenged to create a game that used an alternate controller scheme!
As Lead Game Designer, I decided that we could create a rhythm game where you control an alien ship flying through space and smashing beats to the music!
I oversaw development to make sure the team stayed on track with the original design.
Additionally, I was in charge of doing all the art for the game, so I went with Pixel Art!

RHYTHM GAME CREATION
Plenty of the professors that oversaw Design Week warned us about creating a Rhythm game in a week. Which is completely valid, as there is a lot that goes on behind the scenes in Rhythm games. One must know how to tie in the soundtrack with the code so that you can control the spawning of the beats that the player must hit. But this created another problem as well because not only did the beats have to spawn in time with the music, but they also had to telegraph their spawning for the player to be able to fly over in time. The solution for this was to simply spawn them a little earlier so they are ready to be hit by the player.
WORKING IN A TEAM
Working with a team on a game development project that only spans a week is an invaluable experience. Every single day we had to tackle new challenges and keep up with deadlines. Realistically, our timeframe to make this game was 4 days, since the last day is saved for showcasing our game, which could be argued is the same as shipping the game.
